CSLNewsMaking a Difference in Texas Imagine raising your children with no financial support from the non-custodial parent. Finally, after the children are emancipated and you have long given up hope of collecting the past due support, you receive the money. Perhaps you can help your children with their college tuition, or maybe the money can put you on a more solid financial footing now that your children are raised. Mary Iverson, with the Texas Child Support Division, shares three such examples. The first case involves a custodial parent in Texas and a non-custodial parent in Illinois. The two are parents of one child who is now emancipated. The arrears and interest has grown over the years, and now stands at over $85,000. Because of a match on a workman’s compensation claim through CSLN, payments have been coming in on a regular basis including a lump sum payment of $45,919.54. Over forty collections have come in to date. Recently, the non-custodial parent contacted Texas to let them know he is expecting another lump sum payment and wants to pay off the remainder of his arrears that currently stands at $32,000.00. In the second case, the non-custodial parent lives in Georgia and the custodial parent lives in Texas. They have three children, who are all emancipated. Because of a CSLN match and the resulting collection of $19,650.39, the arrears are now paid in full. A lump sum payment for a custodial parent of $23,520.52 paid off the arrears in total for a third custodial parent with an emancipated child. Not only did this payment make a tremendous difference in the life of the custodial parent, with the help of CSLN, Texas held the noncustodial parent responsible for the support of the child. With the help of CSLN, the Texas Child Support Division was able to over come state borders and the passage of time to hold non-custodial parents financially responsible for their children, making a difference in the lives of custodial parents who were forced to raise their children without any financial help from the non-custodial parent. Thank you, Mary, for sharing these examples of the great work being done by the dedicated child support staff of Texas. Thank you Texas for your outstanding work! |
